Thematic Session

Flood Management

– Mitigation, Preparedness and Response –

Session Organizer and Program Editor:

Dr. Badri Bhakta Shrestha, Senior Researcher, International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM), Public Works Research Institute (PWRI), Tsukuba, Japan

1. Introduction and Objective of the Session

Southern part (plain “Terai” area) of Nepal is one of the most flood prone areas in the South Asia. In this August, the worst rains in 15 years struck Nepal, which caused severe flooding in the Terai with huge impacts on livelihoods, food security and nutrition due to losses in lives, assets, housing, infrastructure including water and sanitation, food stocks and agricultural production. An initial rapid assessment report of August 2017 flood shows that more than 140 people were killed, 460,000 people were displaced and about 65,000 houses completely and 120,100 houses partially destroyed in the Terai of Nepal.

Flood disasters can cause serious damage such as loss of lives and destruction of infrastructure. Therefore, flood disaster risk mitigation plans should be properly prepared and implemented for future floods considering socio-economic changes as well as flood impact situation of local communities. To develop such plans, however, requires evidence-based risk assessment strategies to quantify and mitigate flood risk.

The main aim of this session is to transfer the knowledge and experience on flood prevention, preparedness and response, which may help in disaster risk reduction activities in Nepal. The objectives of this session are:

–       Introduce basic concept of flood modeling, flood hazard mapping and risk mapping

–       Introduce basic concept on preparedness and response

–       Exchange opining and ideas between inter-personnel.

2. Session summary

The Nepal is especially vulnerable to flood disasters, however by sharing knowledges and experiences to better understand the flood prevention, preparedness and responses, helps to reduce risk, mitigate damage and effectively recover from a flood.

3. Program (tentative) [Time Duration 3 hrs]

14:00~16:00 Presentation by experts

Call for paper for “Eighth NEAJ Symposium on Current and Future Technologies” : Extended!

We would like to announce ‘call for papers’ for the 8th “NEAJ symposium on Current and Future Technologies” which is going to be organized in TOKYO on January 25 (Sunday), 2015. Presentations are invited from Nepalese and non-Nepalese academics, researchers, experts and students. We would like to encourage presentation by working people in different Japanese companies.
